Gothenburg Book Fad

October 1, 2007

As anyone living in, near or in the general blast radius of Gothenburg will know the Göteborg Book Fair took place this weekend. For me it had three noticeable effects; my cousin Miriam visited, (which was awesome) everyone got extremely drunk and then hung over (and I mean everyone – the entire city’s population and then some 30 000 visitors) and I bought a couple of books. I’ll probably go into more detail later on, including my thoughts on the publisher Natur & Kultur’s things for strippers, (right now I’m opting against posting the videos on Youtube even though it would increase this blog’s traffic by the thousandfold) the brilliant new tracks Miriam introduced me to and how I’m pretty fed up with people doing coke. Get over the eighties already.

All in good time.

Merrymaking at David’s place

September 3, 2007

Or, I guess, this weekend in pictures. (Feel free to go somewhere else, this is the stuff placeholders are made of.)

I helped David move to his new flat on Thursday. By Saturday night he had the essentials sorted. The turntables and somewhere to sleep, that is.

David at the turntables

Fast forward three and half hours (let’s not mention Radio London ever again, shall we?) to Kraft; the minimal, minimal techno club at Storan (run by Jor-El and Dimitrios_K). I love this stuff. At home. On my (fairly decent) stereo. At a dance floor I can’t stand it – it sends me right to sleep. Especially when the sound system is really sub par (honestly, what happened to everything below 110 hz?) and the crowd looks like it’s on the verge of going postal any minute. I guess I’m just too much of a sucker for the funk to truly get into it. I did love the minimal, minimal, minimal lights though. Basically six strobing heads pointed at a chandelier. Nice.

My first paid advert!

“Paid” in the sense that I expect to be on the guestlist.

There you have it. Festen Gothenburg, Wish, 13th of September. I for one am childishly excited about Roxy Cottontail. See you there!

Seymour Bits at The Eye (and Pancakes)

August 4, 2007

A sure fire way to near empty a dance floor at an electro house club in four minutes: Start off your set with two funk slow jams with extensive keyboard solos.

How to make it half full again: Set Ableton Live to 126 bpm and add some Justice-esque noisy synths. (Which is sad in an of itself. I’ll get back to this in a day or two.)

I have mixed feelings about Seymour Bits. Dutch electro funk with fits of booty bass. He looked pretty cool on stage in a white jump suit with a minimal keyboard/two microphones/computer setup. Unfortunately he’s not as clever and funky as Chromeo in the slow jams and nowhere near as convincing and energizing as Dj Funk when commanding us to shake that Booty our Mama Gave Us. This, coupled with his obvious thing for go-go dancers* (which is only ever ok if done out of irony or by transvestites or ironic transvestites) leaves me biased. I didn’t think the set was particularly good but on the other hand I had quite a funky good time.

I haven’t made good on the whole buying a new camera thing yet so here’s another crappy phone cam video:

* There were no go-go dancers present last night. Thank God.

Things that rock: Pancakes. And wine.

Is the music tag standing out in the tag cloud to the right? I guess I’m pretty single minded. But how could I not share this very poor video capture of Pacific!’s great performance from last night at Glory Boat? (Note to self – buy decent camera, throw cell phone out the window. I hate the little thing anyway.)
